Nanci O Is Hip Hop

DNLee

I’m always happy to highlight women in hip hop who are doing cool stuff, integrating the culture into their business lives, and are a positive influence on others.

If you missed it, check out posts from earlier this year on Dr. Marcyliena Morgan, founder and director of the Hip Hop Archives at Harvard University and Adrienne Smith, CEO of Harlem Hip Hop Tours. You can also read up on the work Psalm One is doing with ASCAP and the America Scores program.

As a result of the continuous search to find these women meet the latest discovery, The Urban Scientist. Dr. Danielle N. Lee, aka The Urban Scientist, is a biologist who studies animal behavior, mammalogy, and ecology. She utilizes social media, informal experiential science experiences, and draws from hip hop to share science with general audiences, with a particular focus on under-served groups.

It’s pretty much common to see hip hop integrated into various levels of education and technology these days. So what’s cool about The Urban Scientist?

The Urban Scientist has blogged on SouthernPlayalisticEvolutionMusic for about a year. The purpose of the blog is to explain evolutionary principles using hip hop music. For example, The Urban Scientist explained how Nicki Minaj’s "Did It On Em" integrates a botany lesson in the bars, details how octopus, having multiple baby daddies, R. Kelly and Usher are all related, and breaks down why female orgasms and Snoop Dogg’s "Sensual Seduction" matters to both men and women.

The Urban Scientist also teaches a university course on Sex, Dating, and Relationships as depicted in popular culture and hip hop music, and explains how evolutionary biology principles come into play. Think research blogging meets Yo! MTV Raps and BET Uncut.

Her work has even been picked up by the esteemed scientific community. The Urban Scientist now has a regular blog with one of the top publications for scientists world wide, the Scientific American. The name of her column is –you guessed it– The Urban Scientist. With her column, she continues doing what she’s been doing all along, but now on a global level. Pretty dope if you ask me.

Be sure to check out The Urban Scientist on Scientific American. She doesn’t post as regularly anymore on SouthernPlayalisticEvolutionMusic but her old posts are still informative, comedic and very educational. You can also follow her on Twitter at @DNLee5.
