“Vouch For That”–Sadie Hawkins

The Carolinas has a handful of independent female rappers that are really working hard. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, in some cases the ladies are outlapping the men, in terms of good music, merchandising, consistency, visuals, shows and viral videos.
Sorry boys.

The notables in North Carolina are Mica Swain, Shelly B, and IWW’s Rapsody. All three have released mixtapes in the past six months that are solid offerings.

South of the border, Columbia’s LeLe AKA Bad Bad was the only female rapper folks were really checking for out of South Carolina. Her mixtapes could be found in stores throughout her city (in some cases selling out), she’s worked with some of SC’s most notable producers, had the streets on lock and was the name people knew as the one SC female rapper really putting in work.

That all shifted a bit when Sadie Hawkins hit the scene.

Hailing out of Columbia, Sadie Hawkins has been doing shows in SC, building a fan base through her blog and Twitter, getting her ATL buzz up at The ATL Record Pool and aligning her team with a common goal. All of this has mostly been off the strength of her debut single “Vouch For That”. One track in and Sadie Hawkins is making noise in SC, all in under roughly the past four months.

On Monday, SC’s reigning Female Rapper Of The Year released “Woman Of The City”, and boy let me tell you, Bad Bad went all the way in on the track. Now I’m not saying this is a diss track, maybe a statement record as one of my cohorts put it, however you want to word it, it’s very obvious LeLe is not going to just sit back and let an upstart come through and take her spot.

The die has been cast. If done right, this could be a good opportunity for both ladies to help further raise interest in female rappers and also the Carolinas. I’m always down for healthy competition, especially if both contenders have skills.

Just keep it on wax and in the booth.

Ladies, go forth and make good records!
