Nanci O Is Hip Hop

Carolina Ghostbusters (@NCGhostbusters) Interview with www.nancioishiphop.com

In the five years since I started this blog documenting Carolina hip hop culture (and beyond) [READ: 5 Favorite Carolina Hip Hop Releases Of The Last 5 Years (2008-2013)], between traveling and attending various events, I’ve met and/or interviewed lots of interesting people doing unique work. From Dr. Tammy Kernodle’s extensive research and documentation of black women in jazz, to Ohio musician/producer/composer Rashad, not everyone I’ve come in contact with is a part of the hip hop community. Each interview has been pretty cool, but this latest one with the Carolina Ghostbusters is hands down the most fun and non-hip hop one I’ve ever done.

Last weekend Ashley from Eargasm Entertainment, the crew and I hit the road to Greenville, South Carolina for the SC Music Awards. At our hotel, this 1960’s Cadillac station wagon (later we learned it’s name: Ecto-1) caught our attention. The whip belongs to the Carolina Ghostbusters, a group of paranormal investigators in the Charlotte/Gastonia area of North Carolina. But they do way more than just ghost hunt.

The Carolina Ghostbusters’ brand is a spin off of the hit 1984 film Ghostbusters, that starred Dan Aykrod and Bill Murray. So Ash and I decided there’s no way we could leave Greenville without seeing if the Carolina Ghostbusters would be willing to sit down with us to talk about their work. Yes, this blog is a digital, curated archive of Carolina hip hop and culture. But I also think it’s cool to highlight the uniqueness of the Carolinas beyond just hip hop.

In this interview with the Carolina Ghostbusters, we talk to M. Doc Geressy and Chuck Carte about why they decided to become paranormal investigators (i.e. “ghost hunters”) and learn about their unique uniforms and ghost hunting equipment. The crew discuss what they’ve experienced on paranormal investigations throughout the Carolinas at locations such as The Devil’s Tramping Ground in Siler City, NC, the haunted USS North Carolina battleship in Wilmington, NC and private residences. We also discuss several of the team’s most weird paranormal investigations (hearing them talk about it kind of creeped me out a bit), places outside of the Carolinas they would love to investigate and if they’d ever consider doing reality television.

The Carolina Ghostbusters also give several tips on what to do if you suspect your home is haunted. You can also check out their weekly broadcast, Sci-Fried Eggs. This interview was literally done on the side of highway I-85 in a parking lot. There was quite a bit of laughter and story telling. Watch our interview with the Carolina Ghostbusters after the jump!
