WXYC Live Stream History

Eighteen years ago on November 7, 1994 WXYC 89.3 FM Chapel Hill, North Carolina became the first radio station in the world to ever simulcast their stream on the internet. WXYC’s original radio internet streaming used the Cu-SeeMe Utility, which was developed at Cornell University. The radio station is located on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill in the Frank Porter Graham Student Union.

Over the years a few other student-run radio stations attempted to lay claim on being the first to stream on the internet. KJHK at The University of Kansas did so at one point, however their university’s documentation notes that KJHK began its internet broadcast on Dec. 3, 1994, almost a month after WXYC.

Here’s a fun fact about WXYC’s Jeopardy! answer. I was watching the show in Durham back in 2002 and the above answer was presented. I immediately sent an email out to the WXYC’s Listserv letting folks know about the answer. Another fellow WXYC’er by the name of Tim Ross, who lived in Chapel Hill at the time, saw my email. In Durham, Jeopardy! came on at 7PM. In Chapel Hill the show aired at 7:30PM. So Tim watched the 7:30PM broadcast and captured the above picture of the answer with his camera.

WXYC is also the station where my Feature Night Thursday show airs once a month. November’s Feature show is 11/15. As usual live streaming will be available on the stations website.

For consideration to be interviewed on future shows, be sure to submit only your best material and make sure any track submissions adhere to these guidelines. Music submissions for the night’s playlist are also being accepted. Check out previous Feature Artist interviews here.
