It’s cool to see vets in the hip hop game doing something productive with their time besides running around complaining about the youngsters. Ice T, I’m talking about you.
Rapper Kangol Kid of the legendary group UTFO is a breast cancer advocate and founding member of Team Mama Luke. In 2008 he and his manager, Shaunda Lumpkin, joined the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. They walked in honor of Lumpkin’s mother Gay Frances Lucas (aka Make Luke), who passed away in 2008 as a result of the disease.
Team Mama Luke has raised several thousand dollars for breast cancer awareness as a result of their efforts. One of the team’s pink T-shirts has been making the rounds since the inaugural walk, and several artists have been signing and writing messages of hope onto it. During the BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta last weekend, LL Cool J, Wiz Khalifa and Rick Ross signed the shirt as well. It will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society.
The Mama Luke team will be participating again in this year’s breast cancer walk on October 16, 2011 in Newark, New Jersey. They will be joined by Ice-T & Coco, Afrika Bambaataa, Roxanne Shante, Milk Dee, Force MD’s, Joe Ski Love and Full Force among others.
