Durham, NC based architectural firm The Freelon Group has been selected to design the current N.C. State University chancellor’s residence into a new home for the university’s Gregg Museum of Art and Design.

The project will include the relocation of the Gregg Museum to a freestanding, LEED Silver-certified facility and the renovated 7,000-square-foot chancellor’s house along with a new 16,700-square-foot wing. A LEED Silver-certified facility is a building that is designed and built using strategies which help improve the environment.

The Freelon Group has designed buildings and museums around the country, including the International Civil Rights Center & Museum, the Sterling Chemistry Lab at Yale University, and The Harvey B. Gantt Center. The Freelon Group is also currently heading the design team for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

Philip Freelon is the principle and owner of The Freelon Group. He is also the dad of Pierce Freelon, emcee for Durham’s hip hop and jazz band, The Beast.
