Nanci O Is Hip Hop

Jason Perlmutter has done more to document and archive the history of Carolina Soul music (both NC & SC) more than anyone I know. We met several years ago and he’s one of the reasons I started blogging about hip hop.

Jason P. founded and runs Carolina Soul.org, which is a website dedicated to the celebration and rediscovery of soul music from the Carolinas. The website has been up since 2005, but I know for a fact Jason has been a fan and collecting recordings of Carolina Soul artists way before that.

Three years ago Jason researched and compiled the 2007/2008 Jazzman/Now-Again Carolina Funk release and has deejayed soul music at various clubs up and down the East coast. He also spends time traveling to towns throughout the Carolinas, meeting and talking with artists and bands of the 60s and 70s, including Chuck Wells, Gerald Hunter, even Greensboro rapper Brandon D’s uncle, “Fly” Eli Davis, who founded Greensboro soul label Payroll Records.

Tomorrow at the North Carolina Museum of History, Jason will be presenting History à la Carte: North Carolina Soul at 12:00 noon. He’ll be discussing and highlighting both famous and obscure soul artists from North Carolina.

For more information about the program visit the N.C. Museum of History’s website.

And be sure to check out the Carolina Soul.org website to learn more about soul music from the Carolinas.
