Yes, I could have posted their mugshot. But surely by now you’ve already seen it and this is a much classier photo.
Between T.I. getting arrested late last week for questionable illegal substances in his Maybach, Young Jeezy falling almost all the way off, 50 Cent playing on Twitter, and Fabulous going back and forth with Soulja Boy like school yard knuckleheads, it’s safe to say several rappers who were on top of the world 5 years ago are doing everything but jumping in the booth these days and/or releasing music fans feel.
On this week’s episode of Where Is Hip Hop?, Randy and I discuss the current legal woes The Kang Of The South has found himself in…again. We talk about what T.I. has been up to since his release (beyond the recent arrest) and Randy notes the previously mentioned rappers all have one thing in common: they haven’t re-invented themselves, with the exception of Soulja Boy —who’s up for a name change soon BTW— and 50 Cent, who has other successful business ventures so I don’t know WTF he’s doing. We do highlight the fact that Tip has the #1 movie in the country right now, Takers, so that along with him being in Hollywood recently makes me think perhaps he’s re-inventing himself as a movie star, a la Will Smith. Whatever direction T.I.’s career is going, the recent arrest certainly doesn’t help. Let’s hope The Kang doesn’t go back to prison over this.
Randy and I also touch on BET’s My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women In Hip Hop documentary and point out the fact, love her or not, Nick Minaj is killing the game right now. Name another female rapper that can demand $50,000 in appearance fees and clear $100,000 over the course of a weekend. Go head, I’ll wait. Speaking of, shout out to female emcee hip hop blogger Glennisha Morgan of TheFembassy.com and her feature during the documentary. Which goes back to Where Is Hip Hop? Episode 57: Hip Hop Bloggers and Branding, where we chopped it up about importance of finding your blog niche and building it.
