Nanci O Is Hip Hop

On some real talk this week on three very different occasions I heard or read the term “think outside the box.” Can you think outside the box? What does that mean?
-To not be cookie cutter
-To not do what everybody else is doing
-To not run in somebody else’s lane. Create your own and blaze the hell out of it.

Earlier this week Head Hunters’ Collard Green posted a video for ‘Rah Jetti’s Beauty Pagent’. Keeping it 110% when I heard the title ‘Rah Jetti’s Beauty Pagent’ and peeped the video the first image that came to mind was The Black Ms. Awareness Ralley from Coming To America (featuring the lovely sounds of Sexual Chocolate headlined by Jackson Heights’ own Randy Watson). The Rah Jetti’s pagent appears to be geared towards high school young ladies with good grades and their parents permission. Don’t forget the $25 entry fee. The winner wins a $1,000 scholarship and lunch with Head Hunter recording artist Lil Brod, whose buzz has been growing consistently over the past couple of months.

Then today over at R.E.’s spot I peeped the new Lil Brod Ft. Sammie track. It seems that Double H is grooming Brod to be the goon with a heart type rap cat. Tying Lil Brod in with the Rah Jetti pagent is a unique and interesting marketing tactic. It’s allowing Lil Brod exposure with an audience and the opportunity to gain fans that typically may not hear his music. The only other place I’ve seen this is during the Mrs. Universe pagent 2 weeks ago when Flo Rida performed; at first I was like what is a rapper doing working at a beauty pagent? As Flo Rida’s performance went on I realized that’s an interesting way to get new fans. Globally.

HH has built off of that concept and added a spin to it without straight out copying what has already been done. This is one way to think outside the box.

I just better not see Shawty No Name or MC Machine Gun Tactics at the next Miss Black Awareness Rally.
