Women Star In Hip-Hop Show

At UNC-Chapel Hill’s WXYC, Durham-based disc jockey, known as Nanci O found old, unspun vinyl from the likes of MC Lyte, Queen Latifah and Ice Cream Tee buried in the back of the station’s library. “And it hadn’t been played in a long time,” says Odom. “It was just a lot of dust on the records.”
With the discovery of this licorice-pizza wealth, she decided to devote a whole show to these hip-hop heroines, turning them into a “Women of Hip Hop” radio special.
Three years and many positive responses later, Odom decided to take the program further and turn it into a full-fledged event.
That’s how the Women of Hip Hop Honors, Concert and Afterparty, happening tonight at Reds, was born. Odom will salute various, independent women in hip-hop, on-stage or behind the scenes. She will also give the MCs their own live sets.
