Left Of Black w: Julie Dash

On the next episode of Dr. Neal’s TV show Left of Black, he will be joined in the studio by Julie Dash and Lizz Wright.

2011 marks the 20th anniversary release of Julie Dash’s ground-breaking film Daughters of the Dust, which was the first feature by an African-American woman to gain national theatrical release. The film draws on Dash’s South Carolina heritage and focuses on three generations of women with roots in the Sea Islands and Gullah culture.

Lizz Wright will be performing at Duke University on October 7. During her talk with Dr. Neal, they will discuss how Wright’s family tradition in storytelling inspired her career as a vocalist, as well as maintaining control of her music career. To date she’s released four full length projects.

Left of Black airs every Monday at 1:30 p.m. (EST) on Duke University’s Ustream channel, ustream.tv/dukeuniversity. Viewers are invited to participate in a Twitter conversation with Dr. Neal and featured guests while the show airs using hash tags #LeftofBlack or #dukelive.

The show is recorded and produced at the John Hope Franklin Center of International and Interdisciplinary Studies at Duke University.
