Nanci O Is Hip Hop

So there’s this kid named Toro Y Moi out of Columbia, SC who up until last month, had been totally off my radar. On the season premiere of HBO’s Entourage, "Still Sound" was featured, which is off his album Underneath The Pine that dropped earlier this year.

Over this past weekend the 2nd annual Hopscotch Music Festival took place in Raleigh. Toro Y Moi, along with Yelawolf, The Foreign Exchange, and another 147 bands played at various venues throughout downtown. I was lucky to catch Toro Y Moi’s set on Saturday night at The Lincoln Theater. Over the course of attending several shows throughout the festival, Toro Y Moi’s was the only one that had a line of people about one hundred + deep

waiting to get in to see him. The venue actually stopped letting people in and many were left outside.

Between Entourage and his live show this weekend, I’m now hooked on his sound, which has been described as chillwave and electronica. I don’t care about all that though, it’s just good music to me.

Toro Y Moi has a new EP dropping this Tuesday September 13 titled Freaking Out, and I’m looking forward to it. He had hands down one of the best shows of the entire Hopscotch weekend, and it’s always cool to discover new music.

Even if you’re late to the party.
