The cover of this book looks crazy right? Fat Kills is a novel written by DMV based author K. Reid. It’s about a full figured young professional named Mia. Like alot of folk I know grinding it out in the industry, Mia has a side hustle of singing at house parties and clubs. 9-5 pays the bills, the after hours hustle and music is her dream. Anyway, early in the book Mia goes to a house party, meets some interesting people and then things take a super twisted turn.

Throughout the novel the main character Mia drops playlists with some of my favorite artists including Kayne, T.I., Bawse, Eryka Badu, etc. Mia also drops many familiar locations, websites and products known to DC natives/residents. The book also mentions my sister in the love of hip hop Erin Berry’s blog After These Messages. That was totally unexpected!


Fat Kills is a pyschological thriller from a hip hop perspective. I’ve never come across pysch thrillers geared towards the hip hop generation. Think Silence Of The Lambs meets XXL Magazine.

Simply stated, this book is crazy as hell. The ending was totally unexpected. Ya’ll better hope you don’t have a Mia in your circle of friends. Then again, you probably DO want somebody like Mia in your crew. Just read the book and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
