Nanci O Is Hip Hop

OK this blog is hip hop/r&b/urban orientated but I had to take a moment out to give Bill Pearce a shout out. I’ve always been a fan of “left of the dial” radio broadcasters. These are the radio personalities who may not be known at your favorite local beauty salon or friendly neighborhood shake spot but are still pretty cool in my book.

One of my old school favorites is Paul Harvery who used to tell the best stories on the radio. Other current favorites is Sister Caroline Pettiford-Ryals and Walter Hatcher The Chatham County Country Boy. You know the lady at your church who pronounces usher board “ursher” and the deacon that’s been at the church since it started? That’s who those two remind me of. People like that makes me want to listen to their shows week after week. Bill Pearce was one such and I dug NightSounds on a reggie basis.

I discovered the radio show NightSounds With Bill Pearce last summer while flipping through the radio dial late one night. His show pretty much consists of him talking about various topics like stress, humility, being yourself, consistancy and more for 30 minutes. Sometimes he’d play the trombone too which is pretty frickin’ awesome. I mean who gets on the radio these days and plays a trombone? Where they do that at?

Anyway Bill Pearce died late last month from Parkinson’s Disease. R.I.P. I think he must of recorded like Tupac or something because his show continues to air new episodes every night. I’ve been listening regularly since he died and have yet to hear a repeat. You can listen to the show on his website, or on FM dials in certain markets.
