Black Ties is the #1 hip hop/r&b club in Raleigh, in addition to being one of the top spots for shows and performances. However the 40/30 Room is slowly starting to take the spotlight because it stay hot around Black Tie. Especially on Sunday nights. Nobody wants to go to a spot with their good clothes on and have to worry about getting aired out.

People joke that it’s fitting that Black Tie is across the street from WakeMed Hospital because shooting victims don’t have far to travel. After shootings and a murder in the parking lot back in 2007 the Raleigh City Council tried to get Black Tie shutdown. There was a petition going around to keep it open and the backlash from the urban community was enough to keep it open.
