Nanci O Is Hip Hop

For the past couple of years Craig Lindsey has been the film critic for the Raleigh News & Observer newspaper. In addition to reviewing just about every type of film released (including major motion pictures & art house movies) Craig was also the Pop Culture Editor for the paper. We’ve had quite a few conversations over the years. Based on the stories he’s told me about the voice mails people have left on his office phone after scathing reviews, I’m convinced there’s some really crazy people in RDU that read the newspaper.

It’s no secret that Craig and I have had our issues in the past (like the time he interviewed me for an article on mixtapes and then wrote that I was a hip hop gadfly). I had no idea what a “gadfly” was but soon learned that it’s essentially an annoying a$$ person. So I kinda went off on him about calling me names in the paper and then Craig explained he meant gadfly in reference to a person who questions the status quo. Whatever dude.

Anyway beyond all that it’s kinda bittersweet news that he’s leaving the paper. Craig wrote an article covering SOHIPOTOME’s very first women in hip hop event in Raleigh back in March 2009. The piece made the whole front page of the weekend LIFE section and my family was so proud. Thanks Craig.

Although he’ll no longer be at The N & O Craig will still be in the print publishing business writing regularly for The Nashville Scene. I wish him all the best. Crizzle!
