Last night the documentary “My Mic Sounds Nice: The Truth About Women And Hip Hop” debuted on BET. If you missed it, here’s part 1 of the video. Parts 2 and 3 are after the jump.
The special featured commentary from Jean Grae (one of my favs), Missy Elliot, MC Lyte, Trina, Chuck D, Kim Osorio plus more. The show gave an in-depth history of women in the culture of hip hop from the early 80’s, the explosion of female artists in the 90s, all the way to the drought of 2010. In watching the special I felt a little nostaligic. I also noticed both Lil Kim and Foxy Brown didn’t give any commentary. And Lauryn Hill’s impact to the game, with just one album, is phenomenal.

Another highlight of the show was seeing hip hop blogger Glennisha Morgan, owner of The Fembassy.com, featured. Glennisha runs the #1 site on the web for female emcees and their business endeavors. She gave a run down of all the new female emcees handling their business on the undergound scene.
